Time for a little vacation from my regular life.  I’m up at Lake Superior, staying at BlueFin Bay in Tofte, MN.

This little painting was done in the last few minutes before the daylight was gone for the evening.  I really liked the colors on the clouds.  We had been fighting the clouds all day, and they finally broke, giving us a wonderful sunset.

I tried something a little different with this painting.  I started the painting with my pallet knife.  I’ve seen other artists do it before, and wanted to give it a try….  It was really fun! The paint takes on a much more sculptural quality as you are working with it.  In the end, however, it felt great to get out a couple of brushes, and really move around all that paint.  As you can see from the above photo, the paint is a little thicker than normal on this one, due primarily to the pallet knife application.

For those interested in the, ‘where in the world’ aspect of  landscape painting, this scene is from Silver Cliff, on Minnesota’s North Shore of Lake Superior.

The Temperance River

This is the first time I have ever painted a waterfall.  It was such a great early fall day when we were on the rocks over looking the upper falls on the Temperance River, near Lake Superior.  One of the most fascinating things about paint this piece, was attempting to capture the feeling of light streaming in between the tree and rocks.  With so much of the river and rocks covered in cool blue shadows, the warm sun light really stood out on the foaming water as it flowed  over the rocks, heading down stream.

I love painting rocks.  There is something so satisfying when you paint something that looks heavy and solid.  This painting was done on panel.  I toned the panel with transparent red oxide.  I then really started working with other transparent pigments.  After that first round, I started the build up of the opaque layers of paint.  I’m very happy with the atmosphere that this helped to create.
