Me leaning up against my studio door.

Me leaning up against my studio door.

The paint has dried and had a day to mellow, and I couldn’t be happier… I love the colors!  The painted walls look great against the stained wood.  I think I’m going to like having a window over my door.  I don’t know that it will serve a big purpose; I just really like it as a detail of my new studio.

In the above photo, you can see the Pratt and Lambert wall colors I picked, and the white of the column that was there when I moved in.

New Studio

The day has finally come for me to move into my new studio space.  I couldn’t be happier with the space.  I finally have the wood floors that I  dreamed of having in my studio since I was a kid!  The only problem was… the wall color.  A few hours work, with the help of my parents and  partner, and those white walls are a distant memory.

We painted 3 of the walls “Putty”, from Pratt and Lambert.  The last wall has been painted “Sierra Night”, also from Pratt and Lambert.  Both are wonderful colors!

The ceilings are 14′ high…I know–pretty cool.  The only drawback was figuring how I was going to paint that.  I decided to paint up to the 12′ mark.  Take a look at the photo below of my dad and I taping off the top of the walls.

Time for a little vacation from my regular life.  I’m up at Lake Superior, staying at BlueFin Bay in Tofte, MN.

This little painting was done in the last few minutes before the daylight was gone for the evening.  I really liked the colors on the clouds.  We had been fighting the clouds all day, and they finally broke, giving us a wonderful sunset.

At work in the my current studio on East Hennipen Ave.

It’s been a quiet week here on the blog, I know.  I’m very excited to report that I have been packing up my studio in preparation for the big move…  I’ll be picking up my current space, and moving it further into NE Minneapolis.

The space that I’m leaving has been good to me since moving in 3 years ago.   The exciting part, is that I think the new space is going to be even better.  I’ll have big new windows on the north and west walls letting in a ton of natural light.  This will also be the first time since I left art school at The Atelier that I will have  a studio with hard wood floors.

Check back again for pictures for the new space!

I tried something a little different with this painting.  I started the painting with my pallet knife.  I’ve seen other artists do it before, and wanted to give it a try….  It was really fun! The paint takes on a much more sculptural quality as you are working with it.  In the end, however, it felt great to get out a couple of brushes, and really move around all that paint.  As you can see from the above photo, the paint is a little thicker than normal on this one, due primarily to the pallet knife application.

For those interested in the, ‘where in the world’ aspect of  landscape painting, this scene is from Silver Cliff, on Minnesota’s North Shore of Lake Superior.

A Touch of Color

The above is  a small oil sketch painted on the edge of a clearing.  I wanted to play a bit more with color on this one.  Some times I fell like my paintings can loose some of the color intensity and variety as I work.  Things tend to get more and more neutral.  I think this painting has definitely keeps some of it’s original freshness.

Interstate State Park, 6x8

This painting is from a spot high up top of the cliffs over looking the St.Croix River.  The river forms the border between Minnesota and Wisconsin.  This particular spot is on the Minnesota side of the river just south of the town of Taylors Falls.  It was a wonderful autumn day with a bright, yet overcast sky.
