Yellow Roses and Swedish Tapestry

I really wanted to try out a yellow background.  I not sure why. That was my over riding thought as I was heading to the studio this morning.  I have had a couple of ideas for larger still life paintings recently using yellow, black, and white.

Upon arriving at the studio, I opened up the cabinet that holds all of my fabric backdrops.  It turns out, the only yellow that I had was a blue and yellow Swedish table runner.  “No problem.” I thought. “I’ll just repeat the pattern and use it as a wall treatment.”  I’m very pleased with the result.  It gives a wonderful feeling to the space that exists behind the yellow roses and footed silver bowl.

I can’t even think of the last time I did a pastel still life.  I had this composition all set up.  I had a square oil painting panel out and ready to go.  I was about to get out the oil paints themselves, and get to work.

As I looked back at my set up, I couldn’t help but see it as a  pastel painting;  the wonderfully vivid color of the magenta background blending with the blue objects on the table and the tablecloth itself.  All of that contrasted against the yellow floral arrangement, and green bowl.

I worked on an Ampersand Pastelboard for this little painting.  Because of the even tooth and the ability to layer and layer pastel on the board, I would definitely recommend them to anyone working in pastel.  I can see really see how the Pastelboard would work well with a gouache or watercolor under-painting.

I had such a great time painting this little silver bowl on Sunday, I decided to paint it again.

I think what draws me to painting the silver bowl against a light background, is all of the lost edges.  That means that there isn’t a lot of contrast between the object itself the background behind it.  When handled correctly, it’s these edges that give a painting it’s sense of atmosphere and gives a painted object a feeling of volume.

Today’s painting is another look at the stargazer lily. This time, I placed it against a light background.  It is interesting to note how refreshing it feels to paint the same subject against two very different background.  I also pulled my easel way back for this little painting.  I’m very happy with how the small silver bowl came out!  I ended up scrapping it off a few times, and repainting it, trying to capture the illusion and feeling of silver with just a few strokes of paint.

I was amazed by the amount of fragrance that one lone lilly produced in my studio today.  The cold snap here in Minnesota has finally lifted. Today was seemed almost tropical at 20 degrees  after living below zero for the last couple of days.

It truly is a wonderful time to be alive when I can be painting fresh tulips in my Minneapolis, Minnesota studio during the coldest stretch of weather that we have had in 5 years.  Today, the high temperature is expected to stay below zero.  The blue and white jar is another favorite object of mine.  I love the combination of cobalt blue and bright red tulips.

This painting is a new format for me.  I thought it worked well with the subject matter.  The panel that it is painted on, is one the I created myself.
