Yellow Roses and Swedish Tapestry

I really wanted to try out a yellow background.  I not sure why. That was my over riding thought as I was heading to the studio this morning.  I have had a couple of ideas for larger still life paintings recently using yellow, black, and white.

Upon arriving at the studio, I opened up the cabinet that holds all of my fabric backdrops.  It turns out, the only yellow that I had was a blue and yellow Swedish table runner.  “No problem.” I thought. “I’ll just repeat the pattern and use it as a wall treatment.”  I’m very pleased with the result.  It gives a wonderful feeling to the space that exists behind the yellow roses and footed silver bowl.

I had such a great time painting this little silver bowl on Sunday, I decided to paint it again.

I think what draws me to painting the silver bowl against a light background, is all of the lost edges.  That means that there isn’t a lot of contrast between the object itself the background behind it.  When handled correctly, it’s these edges that give a painting it’s sense of atmosphere and gives a painted object a feeling of volume.

I have had this jug in my collection of objects for years.  I don’t know why I have never painted it before.  I guess I thought it would be too difficult to try and paint the glaze, and the reflections, and make it look like it had light shinning on it.

In the end, I realized it was the same thing that I tell my students in my own classes; just paint what it is that you see.  Have you ever noticed that it’s always easy to see those kind of  lessons illustrated when you are looking at another person’s work?

One last look at the pomegranates before I take them home to be eaten.  That’s one of the great things about still life painting; being able to eat your props afterwards as long as you paint fast enough.
